Saturday evenings are usually relaxed. It’s a time to prepare for the upcoming work week and making sure everything is in order, that is of course if you’re not at a fierce licence plate auction in Sharjah!
Held at the Jawaher hall, hundreds of licence plate enthusiasts flocked to the hall, most of which were Emiratis. Organisers at the event reportedly had a tough time controlling the enthusiastic crowd on hand especially when bidding began for the number 7 plate.
Within minutes, the price of the prized plate skyrocketed from AED 1 million to AED 5 million with the latter being the final selling price.
But the number 7 plate wasn’t the only plate auctioned off. A total of 55 unique licence plates were purchased
A number of plates drew in big numbers; number 20 sold for AED 1.9 million, number 14 was snapped up for AED 1.81 million, number 55 maxed out at AED 1.55 million and number 69 sold for 1.25 million. According to the organisers, a number of other plates sold for hundreds and thousands of dirhams.
During the event, bids started from anywhere between AED 5,000 and AED 1 million depending on the plate.
Over 300 bidders took part in the auction. Each bidder that took part in the auction were required to hand over a guarantee cheque. If no successful bid was submitted, the amount will be refunded.
Later this month, a special licence plate auction will take place in Dubai. The plates in question are part of the Year of Zayed celebration and each one has a significant meaning relating to the late Ruler of The UAE, Shaikh Zayed.
