It was developed as a more affordable alternative to the flagship Rolls-Royce Phantom. The Rolls-Royce Ghost is the best-selling sedan from the British luxury car marque. However, it doesn’t in any way feel lesser than the Phantom as it is one of the most luxurious cars in the Global market.
All generations of the Rolls-Royce Ghost are powered by twin-turbo V12 engines, offering great performance. If that isn’t what you’re looking for, the Ghost offers a supremely comfortable ride quality and the cabin is opulent. In this edition of the DubiCars Car Spotlight, we take a closer look at the Rolls-Royce Ghost.
Origins Of The Rolls-Royce Ghost
Rolls-Royce was first established in 1904 as a manufacturer of luxury cars. In 1906, the brand launched the Silver Ghost. This sedan was the first to be hailed as the best car in the world. Over the next few decades, Rolls-Royce established itself as a manufacturer of world-class luxury automobiles.
At the turn of the Century, the brand ended up as a subsidiary of BMW. This is where its modern history began. 2003 saw the launch of the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the flagship. The brand then saw an opportunity in a smaller luxury sedan that would compete with the top-spec versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series. This resulted in the development of the Rolls-Royce Ghost.
First Generation (Series 1) | 2009 – 2014
The first generation Rolls-Royce Ghost was based on the BMW L06 platform, shared with the BMW 7 Series. This resulted in a sedan that was a little smaller than the RR Phantom. It was first revealed as a concept named the Rolls-Royce 200EX at the 2009 Geneva International Motor Show and went on sale in September 2009.
Positioned as a more attainable alternative to the Phantom, the Ghost aimed to attract a younger demographic while maintaining the brand’s signature opulence. At the heart of the Series 1 Ghost was a powerful 6.6-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, delivering effortless performance.
From its imposing exterior presence to its meticulously crafted interior, every aspect of the Series 1 Ghost exuded sophistication and luxury. The iconic Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament, elegant lines, and handcrafted details established the Rolls-Royce Ghost as a serious contender in the segment.
First Generation (Series 2) | 2014 – 2020
Building upon the success of the Series 1, Rolls-Royce introduced the Series 2 iteration of the Ghost at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show. It marked a significant evolution in design, technology, and performance while still retaining the same platform and powertrain.
Under the bonnet, the Series 2 Ghost retained the potent V12 engine of its predecessor but received enhancements for improved efficiency and responsiveness. Output remained at 563hp and 850Nm! The Series 2 featured an updated suspension ensuring a serene and comfortable ride for occupants.
Visually, the Series 2 Ghost received subtle yet impactful design tweaks, including revised front and rear styling elements and updated LED lighting signatures. Inside the cabin, luxurious materials, advanced technology features, and bespoke customization options elevated the ambiance to new heights of luxury and exclusivity.
It was with this generation that Rolls-Royce introduced the rebellious Black Badge Ghost with more performance and a darker theme.
Second Generation | 2019 – Present
In 2019, Rolls-Royce unveiled the highly anticipated second generation of the Ghost, representing a bold leap forward in design, engineering, and technology. At the heart of the second-generation Ghost lies an all-new aluminum architecture, providing enhanced rigidity, agility, and comfort.
The iconic Spirit of Ecstasy grille, redesigned headlights, and sleeker profile contribute to a more contemporary and dynamic aesthetic. Yet, it retains the brand’s timeless elegance. Under the bonnet, a refined iteration of the renowned V12 engine delivers power with more efficiency.
It is complemented by advanced technologies like AWD and four-wheel steering for unparalleled control. Inside the cabin, the second-generation Ghost remains the pinnacle of luxury and craftsmanship. It features exquisite materials, meticulous attention to detail, and cutting-edge technology seamlessly integrated throughout.
From the iconic Starlight Headliner to the state-of-the-art infotainment system, every element is meticulously curated to provide an unparalleled sensory experience for occupants.
