Omoda & Jaecoo are the two latest Chinese car brands to have debuted in the automotive world. Omoda and Jaecoo were launched at the brand’s Global Conference held at its home base in Wuhu, China. Both Omoda & Jaecoo are expected to arrive in the UAE market later this year.
The Omoda Brand & The Omoda 5 EV
Omoda as a brand has been around for just over a year now. At the Auto Guangzhou 2021 expo, the Omoda 5 SUV was unveiled. In February 2022, the SUV went into production and saw immense success not just in the Chinese market but also in several other countries around the world.
The Omoda 5 is available with either a 1.5-litre or a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine and is expected to arrive in the UAE market later this year. Ahead of the Omoda 5’s arrival in the UAE, the brand has now debuted the electric version of the SUV.
The Omoda 5 EV first debuted at the brand’s Global Conference at the brand’s headquarters in Wuhu, China, and was then displayed at the Omoda pavilion at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show. Apart from the electric powertrain, the Omoda 5 EV features a few design changes to set it apart from its petrol-powered counterpart.
Up front, the elaborate diamond matrix grille is now replaced by a solid piece of bodywork. This is because there is no radiator behind it and hence there is no requirement for airflow from the outside. The Omoda 5 EV is powered by a 61kWh battery pack that sends power to a 221hp electric motor. A plug-in hybrid variant of the SUV is also said to be in the pipeline.
The Jaecoo Story
While Omoda is targeting the crossover market, Jaecoo was launched to target those looking for an urban off-road SUV. According to the brand, it is ‘specifically designed for urban elites with extraordinary style, and on the other hand fully satisfies the travel needs of users with exquisite taste and outdoor exploration, delivering an elegant and stylish driving experience.’
Jaecoo revealed two models —Jaecoo 7 & Jaecoo 9. These two models have a more straightforward and boxy design language. More details of the engines on offer are still awaited. However, given that the Jaecoo 9 is a spin-off of the Chery Tiggo 9, we can expect the same Chery family engine & gearbox combinations to make their way under the bonnet of the Jaecoo SUV. Omoda & Jaecoo vehicles are all set to be launched in the UAE later this year.
