With out a doubt, smaller engines, hybrids and all-electric motors are slowly becoming the norm. While most manufacturers are discontinuing their massive power units due to environmental and fuel economy, the Mercedes V12 along with other 12 cylinder manufacturers are here to stay.
Reports have surfaced asking head of Mercedes Research and Development division about whether or not the Mercedes V12 will be discontinued. “I don’t see that going away quickly” was Ola Källenius response even though the Mercedes V12 is not flying off shelves similar to the V8’s.
Select markets including the GCC can’t get enough of the Mercedes V12 and other equally large motors which is why the German manufacturer has no plan to halt production of the V12.
Some may remember Aston Martin being pressurised to develop a smaller more efficient car. Which they did with the Aston Martin Cygnet. They built a hand full of compact hatchbacks based on the Toyota iQ. While they didn’t prove to be successful, they have shot up in price on the used car market due to their rarity.
Mercedes V12 motors will continue to live on for the foreseeable future powering select models of the S-Class and the mighty G 65 AMG. Of course with concerns and certain restrictions on these large units, Mercedes will adhere to any changes that need to be made to conform to national and international regulations to keep theirs in production.
