History

The Toyota Supra, a legendary sports car, has a rich history. Its roots trace back to the luxurious Toyota 2000GT, but it truly found its identity as a high-performance model when it became a performance-oriented variant of the Celica. The fourth generation, the iconic A80 Supra, with its powerful 2JZ engine and striking design, achieved cult status and was immortalised in popular culture.

However, stricter emissions regulations and shifting market trends led to its discontinuation in 2002. After a long hiatus, Toyota revived the Supra in 2019 with the fifth generation, sharing its platform with the BMW Z4, marking a new chapter in the Supra’s storied history. Exterior Design

The fifth-generation Supra’s exterior is a bold reinterpretation of its iconic predecessor. The car’s low, wide stance and muscular contours instantly convey its performance-oriented nature.

The front fascia is dominated by a large grille flanked by sharp LED headlights. From the side, the Supra’s elongated silhouette and classic fastback shape look iconic and old-school.

Other exterior features include:

Interior Design

The Supra’s driver-centric space along with the dual-tone black and red colour scheme hints to the car’s performance-oriented character. The interiors are decked in high-quality Alcantara contributing to the overall sense of refinement and sporty feel.

The seats are typically designed with a strong focus on lateral support, essential for spirited driving. However, the Supra’s compact dimensions mean rear-seat accommodations are limited and best suited for smaller occupants or occasional use.

Driving Impressions

Engine & Gearbox:

The Supra’s power delivery is linear and progressive, with ample torque available across the rev range. There’s a noticeable surge of power around the mid-range, making overtaking manoeuvres effortless.

The eight-speed automatic transmission is well-matched to the engine, offering smooth and rapid shifts. In Sport mode, the transmission holds gears longer, enhancing the engine’s responsiveness.

Suspension & Handling:

The Supra’s Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) is a game-changer. It drastically alters the car’s character, transforming it from a taut, performance-oriented machine to a surprisingly compliant cruiser at the push of a button.

In Sport mode, the suspension firms up, enhancing body control and responsiveness. The car feels glued to the road, with minimal body roll and precise turn-in. The steering is precise and offers good feedback, inspiring confidence in corners.

Review Verdict

Ultimately, the Supra is a driver’s car that rewards those seeking a thrilling and engaging driving experience. With its striking design, powerful engine, and engaging driving dynamics, it delivers as advertised. It’s a worthy successor to the legendary A80, offering a modern interpretation of the Supra’s iconic legacy.
