New Toyota Hilux Champ Makes Global Debut: The Utilitarian & Modular Workhorse Pickup Truck

Toyota has unveiled yet another utilitarian pickup truck to the world, the Hilux Champ. The new pickup truck serves as an affordable alternative to the already popular Hilux and is currently available only in Thailand. We expect the Hilux Champ to reach other parts of the world including the UAE starting next year.

Hilux Champ

The Hilux Champ, Toyota’s second offering in the Hilux brand, offers up to 10 configurations tailored to diverse markets. Built on a customizable platform, it allows buyers to personalize their vehicles with the help of third-party car body-builders or coach-builders.

The Champ is the production version of the IMV 0 concept showcased in Japan and the Toyota Rangga concept in Indonesia. Having gained popularity in the Philippines, where there is a notable demand for customizable vehicles, it is set to be launched in the UAE with an expected starting price of AED 50,000.

Engine & Transmission

The Hilux Champ is offered with three distinct powertrain choices in its production version. The first option is a 2.4-litre diesel engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed AT. The powertrain produces 150hp and 350Nm paired with a manual gearbox. The torque increases to 400Nm with the 6-speed AT.

The lineup also includes two naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine choices – a 2.0-liter variant generating 130hp and 183Nm, and a 2.7-liter variant delivering 166hp and 245Nm of torque. Both petrol engines are equipped with options for either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. Furthermore, there are discussions about the potential introduction of a robust hybrid petrol option in certain markets.

Long Wheelbase

The Hilux Champ SWB boasts dimensions of 4.9 meters in length, 1.8 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height. It features a 2,750mm wheelbase, which aligns with the Toyota Innova Crysta. Additionally, with a ground clearance of 180mm, it offers a compact yet robust design.

On the other hand, the Hilux Champ LWB spans 5.3 meters in length, sharing the same width and height as its SWB counterpart. Its elongated frame comes with a 3,085mm wheelbase, ensuring stability and ample space. Both versions maintain a ground clearance of 180mm for versatile off-road capabilities.

Exterior Design

The exterior design of the Hilux Champ is both quirky and simple. The large plastic cladding surrounding the grille gives it a bold look. Adding to the brawny workhorse design are the exceptionally large bumper and skid plate, which also house the fog lamps. The headlamps of the Hilux Champ feature a unique design, with the main headlamp sandwiched between two LED DRLs on either side.

Interior Design

On the inside, the theme remains functional and utilitarian. The cabin accommodates three people, including the driver, with a bench seat. The basic layout features a semi-digital instrument cluster and air conditioning. Standard models do not include entertainment features. However, some trims come with colour-coordinated accents to uplift the cabin.
