Usually, before a motor show opens its doors, car manufacturers show off what to expect. With the New York Motor Show just around the corner, you’d expect the same thing. While most if not all brands are sticking with tradition, Toyota has decided to take a different approach with a giant egg with what could be a new Toyota Hatchback inside.
Details remain scarce about what is actually inside and for all we know, the 2019 Toyota Rav 4 which is confirmed for the show, could be hiding inside. However, that would be a tight squeeze for the SUV. So that’s why we’ve got our money down on a smaller hatchback model.
Why a Toyota Hatchback?
Of all the body styles Toyota currently offers, the hatchback has the lowest total, at least in the US and the Middle East. GCC residents have the Yaris hatchback, and that’s it, American consumers at least have that and the Corolla iM to choose from.
The iM is actually a rebranded Auris Toyota hatchback which conveniently debuted with a fresh look at the recent Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. Riding on the new TNGA platform, the latest Toyota Hatchback features a bolder look while measuring longer and wider compared to the outgoing Auris model.
In Europe, the Auris can be had with three different four-cylinder motors including a 1.2-litre turbocharged rated at 116 horsepower. The other two flavours available are hybrids with 1.8- and 2.0-litre displacements rated at 122 and 180 hp respectively.
Toyota’s egg is set to hatch on the 24th of March 2018, stay tuned.
