Another day and another outrageous creation from Mercedes-AMG. This time around, the performance tuning house turned to the brand’s flagship SL roadster. It has resulted in the most powerful convertible Mercedes-Benz ever made called the SL63 S E Performance.
The plug-in hybrid roadster is based on the SL63 and is now the top-spec trim in the SL’s line-up. It features several performance upgrades and a few design changes to handle the mind-bending power from the F1-inspired hybrid powertrain.
SL63 S E Performance Engine & Gearbox
The performance roadster carries over the 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbo petrol engine from the SL63, producing 605hp and 850Nm. The engine is paired with the E Performance hybrid powertrain that includes a 150kW motor and 6.1kWh battery pack, bringing the max power to 816hp and peak torque to a head-altering 1,420Nm.
The hybrid powertrain is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission along with the brand’s 4Matic+ AWD system. This allows the SL63 S E Performance to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 2.9 seconds and continue to hit a top speed of 317km/h.
The electric motor also allows for all-electric driving up to 13km per charge. The battery can be charged using the 3.7kW on-board AC charger.
Other Mechanical & Aero Updates
- Active aerodynamics with an extendable rear spoiler and a front spoiler that adjusts automatically depending on speed and driving conditions.
- AMG Active Ride Control suspension with semi-active roll stabilisation for better handling and comfort.
- Active rear-axle steering for improved agility and stability.
- AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system for confident stopping power.
SL63 S E Performance Design & Interior Updates
Most of the design and features are the same as SL63. However, the E Performance introduces aerodynamically optimized lightweight AMG alloy wheels, with a new 20-inch front and 21-inch rear.
The rear section features an integrated plug-in charging flap and a model name highlighted in red. Numerous paints and individual equipment details are available, along with the exclusive MANUFAKTUR programme for further customization.
On the inside, there have not been any significant changes in the SL63 S E Performance. It continues to feature two screens (12.3-inch instrument cluster and 11.9-inch infotainment) along with the latest MBUX AI assistant technology to provide the ultimate in-car cabin experience. Customers can choose the optional AMG performance seats with integrated headrests and ventilation to further enhance the sporty experience.
The SL63 S E Performance proves that sustainability and thrilling driving experiences can coexist. The speed demons will continue to live on in the era of sustainability mobility.
