New BYD Pick-Up Teased Ahead Of Launch — To Rival Toyota Hilux

BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant, sent shockwaves through the automotive industry with the recent reveal of its first-ever “new energy” pickup truck. This exciting development of the new BYD pick-up promises to shake up the traditional pickup truck segment, offering a powerful and eco-friendly alternative to gas-guzzling options.

While details are still emerging, here’s everything we know so far about the new BYD pickup truck:

Design

Leaked images showcase a boxy silhouette, a design language typical of traditional pickup trucks. BYD’s pick-up appears to be a dual-cab configuration, offering ample passenger and cargo space.

While the camouflage hides design details, we can expect a modern and potentially aggressive aesthetic that aligns with BYD’s design philosophy. Some of the distinctive design elements that were noticed include:

  • Twin-lens Headlamp Design
  • High Bonnet Line
  • Large-Side Mirrors
  • Wide Wheel Arches
  • Short Bed
  • Roof Rails
  • Charging & Fuel Door

Interiors

BYD is keeping the specifics of the pickup’s interior under wraps for now, but based on glimpses, it appears to borrow from the BYD Leopard 5. We can expect the new BYD pick-up to come packed with a ton of features including a large touchscreen infotainment.

Plug-in Hybrid Powertrain

This BYD pickup is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) designed for both performance and efficiency. It leverages a combination of a gasoline engine and electric motors to achieve an impressive total driving range of 1,000km.

While the exact engine size remains unconfirmed, rumours suggest a 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline engine working in conjunction with dual electric motors on the new BYD pick-up. Additionally, the PHEV system boasts a pure electric range of roughly 100km.

Toyota Hilux Rival

BYD remains tight-lipped on the exact dimensions of their new pickup, but they’ve confirmed it will be similar in size to the popular Toyota Hilux. However, the BYD carves its niche with a cutting-edge plug-in hybrid powertrain, a major advantage over the Hilux’s traditional gasoline options.

Additionally, BYD could also launch a pure EV version of the pickup that will rival the likes of the Ford F-150 Lightning, Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, and the Tesla Cybertruck; among others.

New BYD Pick-up Launch

BYD is targeting the global market with this pickup truck, specifically in regions like Australia, South Africa, and Southeast Asia. While the official launch date remains undisclosed, positive signs are emerging.

The truck is expected to be showcased at the Beijing Auto Show later this month. This suggests a potential launch sometime in 2024, though the exact timeframe is yet to be confirmed by BYD. Who is Wang Chuanfu? Read the linked article to know more about the man behind the brand’s success.
