Mercedes-Benz is recalling a huge line-up of cars in the United States due to a critical fault in the fuel pump impeller. This issue poses a risk of complete power loss. Concerns raised in June 2022, following reports of erratic power delivery in certain models outside the U.S., prompted the recall of 79,676 Mercedes-Benz cars.
What Is The Issue?
The recall addresses a malfunction in the fuel pump impeller, discovered during a six-month investigation. The impeller’s deformation, failing to meet specifications, may lead to contact with the fuel pump housing, causing mechanical resistance.
This issue has the potential to result in the fuel pump shutting down, consequently causing a loss of vehicle propulsion and elevating the risk of accidents or injuries. The issue came to light in June 2022 following reports of inconsistent power delivery with specific models outside the U.S.
We have Mercedes-Benz cars imported into the country from the United States. This means some of the cars that have made it to the UAE market could be affected by the recall.
What Is The Solution?
To rectify the problem, Mercedes-Benz will replace the fuel delivery module on affected vehicles at no cost to owners. Additionally, the brand is also modifying the production procedure at the fuel pump supplier, ensuring the issue will no longer occur in cars manufactured.
Affected Models and Production Timeline?
The recall impacts a total of 79,676 vehicles, including models like GLE, GLS, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL, E-Class Coupe, E-Class Convertible, CLS, AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, and G-Class. Furthermore, these cars manufactured between 1 August 2021 and 31 March 2023 are part of the recall.
The Fix?
Dealers will replace the fuel delivery module on affected vehicles, addressing the fault with the fuel pump impeller. However, on December 28, 2023, manufacturers notified dealers about the recall, and they will inform owners before February 13, 2024. They will promptly replace the fuel delivery module without charging owners.
Other Important Information On The Recall
Owners of impacted vehicles may observe signs such as rough engine performance or receive warning messages on the instrument cluster before the fuel pump shuts down. The recall is a proactive measure by Mercedes-Benz to ensure the safety and reliability of the affected vehicles.
