Persistent rumours have floated around the automotive industry that Mercedes is hard at work creating a cost-effective AMG car for the masses. Previously rumoured to be called the A40, AMG CEO Tobias Moers has revealed the latest AMG vehicle will bear the Mercedes A35 AMG moniker.
Spotted in Southern Europe, the entry-level hot hatch is covered from head-to-toe in heavy camouflage. However, there are a few hints of what to expect.
Enlarged air intakes are slightly visible, and a high-performance brake system with drilled rotors and larger brake callipers are visible on each corner. Around the back, a dual exhaust system pokes out which is said to deliver quite a tune.
Similar to other A-Class models, the A35 AMG will ride on the MFA2 platform which is said to be lighter and larger compared to the previous generation.
Whose competing with the Mercedes A35 AMG?
Slotting between the A45 and A250 hatchbacks, the A35 AMG will fly out of the factory and directly compete with the Volkswagen Golf R and Audi S3.
The Mercedes A35 AMG will utilise a compact 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. According to sources, 340 horsepower pumps through the hot hatch. Mighty impressive although the new A45 AMG is allegedly slated to ship with 400 hp if not more.
In other Mercedes news, the AMG V12 life-cycle may be coming to an end, and the CLS 53 sedan will make it’s debut early next year at the 2018 North American International Motor Show.
