Shown off various times as a concept, sources claim that a successor the Mazda RX family is indeed in the works and is set to debut in 2019 in production trim. Next year, Mazda plans to showcase the vehicle at next year’s Toyko International Motor Show.
Based on the Mazda RX-Vision what makes this car so unique is the engine powering two of the wheels or all of the wheels. It’s said that a single 1.6-litre two rotor Wankel engine paired with a turbocharger and is estimated to push out 400 horsepower. And that’s not the juiciest information that has been speculated.
The RX-9 is a to have lighting quick acceleration with reports claiming it can be compared to a motorbike and on top of that, it’ll tip the scales at around 1,300 kilos. If true, not only will it be extremely nimble and quick but four Japanese Icons will return to the realms of sports cars as the RX-9 will line up alongside the 2017 Acura NSX, Nissan GT-R and Toyota’s upcoming Supra successor.
Oddly enough, even though the vehicle is still a few years away, a price tag has been attached. Estimated to cost around $79,641 or AED 292,533. There are even rumours pointing towards enhanced version for track days to further challenge the GT-R and rivals.
On a side note, when the concept pops up next year, the world will also celebrate 50 years of Felix Wankel’s bizarrely brilliant engine and 40 years after the first production car was powered by the rotary.
