A visionary, a pioneer, and a true icon of motorsport, Enzo Ferrari’s legacy transcends the realm of automobiles. In this DubiCars Personality Of The Month article, we take a look at the story of the man behind Ferrari.

The Early Years: A Passion Ignited

Enzo Anselmo Ferrari was born on February 20, 1898, in Modena, Italy. From a young age, he displayed an insatiable passion for cars and racing. At the age of 10, he witnessed the 1908 Circuito di Bologna race. This further fueled his dreams of one day becoming a renowned racing driver.

However, his aspirations were put on hold when World War I erupted, and Enzo was drafted into the Italian Army. Following the war, Enzo’s career took a different trajectory. He found employment with a small automotive company called CMN (Costruzioni Meccaniche Nazionali). At CMN, he honed his skills as a mechanic and made a name for himself in the world of motorsport.

Enzo Ferrari was soon promoted to race car driver. He debuted at the 1919 Parma-Poggio di Berceto hillclimb race behind the wheel of a C.M.N 15/20 powered by a 2.3-litre inline-4 engine. In 1920, Ferrari joined Alfa Romeo as a race driver. With Alfa, he took his first Grand Prix victory in 1923 at Ravenna.

The Birth Of A Legend: Scuderia Ferrari

In 1929, Enzo Ferrari founded Scuderia Ferrari. It was a racing team that would serve as the foundation for his automotive empire. In 1932, after the death of his son Alfredo Ferrari, Enzo decided to retire from racing. Instead, he took onboard well-known racing drivers Giuseppe Campari & Tazio Nuvolari.

Initially, Scuderia Ferrari operated as a racing division for Alfa Romeo. However, it wasn’t long before Enzo’s ambitions outgrew his role within the company. In 1939, Enzo parted ways with Alfa Romeo. He then set out to realize his vision of building his own cars under the iconic prancing horse emblem. Thus, Ferrari S.p.A. was born, marking the beginning of a new chapter in automotive history.
