The EV revolution might have been kickstarted by new car manufacturers and startups, but the giants of the automotive world were quick to follow. With their engineering and R&D prowess, these legacy automotive manufacturers developed brilliant products. One such brand is Volkswagen.
In 2019, Volkswagen launched its first ID series product — the ID.3 hatchback. It was the precursor of a whole range of electric vehicles to come from the Volkswagen ID range. The Volkswagen ID.6 is the largest ID series EV yet. In this edition of the DubiCars Car Spotlight, we take a detailed look at the Volkswagen ID.6. Read on to know more.
Volkswagen’s EV Heritage
Electric vehicles are all the rage now and everyone wants to have their slice of the EV market. However, not many know that Volkswagen isn’t entirely new to the game. Volkswagen’s EV tryst goes way back to 1972 when the German brand’s Centre for Future Research developed and tested the Elektro Transporter.
Based on a VW T2 Transporter, the electric vehicle was powered by a lead accumulator. Then in 1976, an electric version of the Volkswagen Golf was also developed. However, these EV tests were abandoned due to a lack of powerful battery technology. Back in the day, lithium-ion technology didn’t exist and those lead-acid batteries were too heavy while also unable to hold enough power.
Volkswagen got back on the EV track in 2013 when it showcased the e-Golf prototype. However, it didn’t go into production. Then in 2019, VW launched the ID.3 and finally put an EV into series production.
Volkswagen ID Series
According to the German auto giant, ID stands for intelligent design, identity & visionary technologies. All of Volkswagen’s current and future EVs will bear the ID prefix.

Volkswagen ID.6
At the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show, Volkswagen showcased the ID. Roomzz Concept. The concept was an outrageous and futuristic electric SUV with sliding doors at the front and rear. A couple of years later, the production version was revealed and launched.
The Volkswagen ID.6 features a futuristic yet subtle design and styling. It has the Volkswagen family styling language and is one of the best-looking models in its segment. It features three-row seating and is packed with the latest features. It is sold in both six and seven-seat configurations.
The ID.6 is produced only in China through Volkswagen’s partners — FAW & SAIC. Volkswagen-FAW produces the ID.6 Crozz while Volkswagen-Saic produces the ID.6 X. There are a few subtle differences between the two versions. But the basic vehicle remains the same, which means the powertrain is identical.
The base variant is rear-wheel drive only and the electric motor produces 177hp and 310Nm. There is a higher-spec RWD model, and the motor produces 201hp in this variant. The dual-motor variant is the top-spec model and together, the two motors produce 302hp and 620Nm.
It is available in two battery capacities — 58kWh & 77kWh. It has a claimed range of up to 580 kilometres. In the UAE too, the Volkswagen ID Series models are gaining popularity.
