BMW i5 to debut next decade, brand focuses on hybrids for now

We’ve all seen the subtle renderings of the upcoming BMW i5, and we can’t wait to hit the streets. Looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer as BMW have decided to finalise their hybrid model line up before going all-electric.

3 and 7-series hybrid BMW’s are readily available as are hybrid versions of the X6 and right now the brand is preparing the launch of the 530e sedan as well as the next generation of X3 models which are set to receive a plug-in hybrid system.

Now this could be a step in the wrong direction for the Bavarian brand as the all-electric market is picking up serious pace especially when it comes to its rivals. Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz will no doubt pounce on this opportunity.

BMW i5 models are expected to be carrying a 110 kWh battery pack allowing the vehicle to travel an impressive 550 km on a single charge. The brand is said to be offering an upgraded version too which will enable 750 km journey instead!

Sources claim that after the BMW i5 hits the market, other BMW models will follow suit when it comes to electric drivetrains with many pointing out the 3, 5 and 7-series will be the first lot to benefit from the new technology. 500 km is the distance these three are aiming for, and it’s also speculated that an electrified X3 is to follow shortly afterwards.

Craving for some of that hybrid powered Bimmers? we’ve got used BMW i8 for sale in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
