Dubai’s New Salik & Parking Charges for 2025: What You Need To Know

In a bid to tackle congestion and enhance traffic flow, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced significant updates to Salik toll charges and public parking fees, effective in 2025. The changes reflect Dubai’s commitment to evolving its transportation infrastructure while promoting smarter traffic management.

Here’s everything you need to know about these updates, including fee structures, timings, and how they’ll impact daily commuters and event-goers.

Updated Salik Charges: What’s New?

Dubai’s Salik toll system is getting a revamp with time-based variable pricing. Starting at the end of January 2025, the charges will be higher during peak hours, encouraging drivers to use alternate routes or travel during less busy times.

New Salik Charges:

  • Peak Hours (Weekdays): AED 6 (6:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM)
  • Off-Peak Hours (Weekdays): AED 4 (10:00 AM – 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM – 1:00 AM)
  • Sundays: AED 4 all day
  • Free Salik Hours: 1:00 AM – 6:00 AM (Every Day)

These adjustments aim to spread out traffic more evenly throughout the day, ensuring smoother commutes for all.

Updated Parking Fees

Public parking charges will also shift to a time-based system to align with peak and off-peak traffic patterns. These updates will roll out a the end of March 2025:

Event Zone Congestion Pricing Introduced

In a first for Dubai, RTA is introducing congestion pricing in major event zones to manage high traffic volumes during major events. Public parking in these zones will cost AED 25 per hour during big events.

The Dubai World Trade Centre zone will be the first to implement this, starting in February 2025. Other big event zones such as Expo 2020 as expected to follow suit. This initiative is designed to reduce gridlock and encourage visitors to consider alternative modes of transportation like public transit or ride-sharing.

Reasons For The New Salik & Parking Charges

The RTA’s latest updates are part of a broader, forward-thinking strategy to reduce traffic congestion and improve the efficiency of Dubai’s road network. As the city continues to grow as a global hub for tourism, business, and events, managing traffic effectively has become a top priority.

Variable pricing for Salik and parking not only incentivizes off-peak travel but also supports Dubai’s sustainability goals by encouraging the use of public transportation.

How Commuters Will Be Affected

Daily Drivers

For regular commuters, the new Salik peak charges mean planning ahead is more critical than ever. Trips during off-peak hours can save you AED 2 per crossing, which adds up for those who use Salik multiple times daily. This especially applies to those who use Sheikh Zayed Road’s multiple toll crossings on a regular basis.

Going past the three toll gates on SZR twice a day during your morning & evening commutes to and fro work currently costs you AED 24. The same would cost you AED 36 from February 2025. Considering a 24-day work month, the new charges add up to AED 864 per month, compared to the current AED 576 — an AED 288 increase. Here’s our guide on how to recharge Salik, you might need to keep it handy.

Leisure Drivers

Sunday drivers can breathe a sigh of relief as the AED 4 flat fee remains unchanged. For night owls, free Salik hours between 1:00 AM and 6:00 AM ensure late-night travel stays cost-effective.

Event Attendees

If you’re attending major events at hotspots like the Dubai World Trade Centre, be prepared for the AED 25/hour parking fee. This pricing is steep but aims to minimize traffic chaos and encourage the use of public transportation. It would be better to park your car away from the venue.

Tips to Save on Salik & Parking Costs

  1. Travel Off-Peak: As far as possible, schedule your commutes outside peak Salik hours to save on toll fees.
  2. Use Public Transport: Metro and bus services are cost-effective and stress-free alternatives.
  3. Share rides with colleagues or friends to split costs and reduce congestion.
  4. Plan Your Parking: Opt for parking outside of the peak hours on weekdays whenever and wherever possible.

What’s Next?

The introduction of time-based variable pricing and congestion fees marks a new chapter in Dubai’s journey toward smarter urban mobility. As these changes come into effect in 2025, the RTA will continue monitoring their impact and exploring further innovations to improve traffic flow and sustainability.

Dubai’s approach is an extreme, yet bold step forward, reflecting its vision of becoming a model city for efficient and sustainable transport systems. While these updates may require some adjustments from residents and visitors, they underline Dubai’s commitment to creating a seamless, efficient commuting experience.
