New Ferrari F80 Revealed: Most Powerful Road-Going Ferrari Ever

The Ferrari F80 marks a groundbreaking step in supercar innovation, blending high performance with advanced hybrid technology and design influenced by Formula 1. The new F80 is the fastest and most powerful road-legal Ferrari ever produced and will take over the mantle from the LaFerrari.

Ferrari has timed the world premiere of their latest supercar perfectly, weeks after the reveal of its primary rival, the McLaren W1. With this, we only need Porsche to bring out the production version of the Misson X to form the holy trinity again.

The Ferrari F80 will be produced in a limited run of just 799 units, aligning with Ferrari’s tradition of exclusive, high-performance supercars like the GTO, F40, and LaFerrari.

F1-Inspired Technology

The Ferrari F80 incorporates MGU-K and MGU-H systems from Formula 1, recovering both kinetic and heat energy for enhanced performance and efficiency.
Its active aerodynamics mirror F1’s focus on optimising downforce and drag, while advanced carbon fibre chassis materials reduce weight and improve stiffness, just like in F1 cars.
The active suspension system adjusts in real time for stability, and the CCM-R Plus brakes use F1-derived materials for superior braking.
Ferrari’s SSC 9.0 with digital twin technology, adapted from F1 simulation tools, ensures precise handling and dynamic control.

The 3.0-litre V6 engine on the supercar, produces an impressive 900 hp, the highest specific power ever for a Ferrari engine. The hybrid system adds another 300 hp, bringing the total to 1,200 hp with its electric front axle (e-4WD) and rear motor (MGU-K). The engine is closely related to the powerplant of Ferrari’s 499P, which won two consecutive 24 Hours of Le Mans races.

The F80 incorporates Formula 1-derived technology such as the MGU-K and MGU-H systems. The MGU-K is an electric motor that recovers kinetic energy, while the MGU-H generates power from the heat of the exhaust gases through turbines, making use of an e-turbo system.

The eManettino on the F80 offers three driving modes: Hybrid, Performance, and Qualify.

Hybrid mode is the default setting, optimising energy recovery and battery charge to ensure the MGU-K motor delivers a boost when needed.
Performance mode focuses on maintaining continuous performance for track sessions, keeping the battery charge around 70%.
Qualify mode maximises power output by combining the electric motor and internal combustion engine (ICE) torque for ultimate performance.

Aerodynamics

The Ferrari F80’s aerodynamics have been meticulously designed for optimal performance. The cooling system, which dissipates over 200 kW of thermal power, integrates seamlessly with the car’s aerodynamic profile. Radiators are positioned strategically to maximize airflow while minimizing disruption to the overall aerodynamic performance.

Innovative elements like NACA ducts and integrated winglets optimize airflow and cooling, while the triplane front configuration ensures efficient air management. The active aero system dynamically adjusts components such as the rear spoiler, improving downforce and balance in different driving conditions.

Chassis, Suspension, Brakes & Tyres

The F80’s chassis is a marvel of multi-material construction, blending carbon fibre and aluminium for strength and lightweight performance. The carbon fibre tub and roof are borrowed from Ferrari’s Formula 1 designs, ensuring both safety and rigidity.

The car features fully independent suspension, actuated by 48V electric motors on all four corners, along with active inboard dampers and 3D-printed wishbones. These components contribute to a more precise control of the vehicle’s dynamics, especially in track conditions.

The Brembo-developed CCM-R Plus brakes use longer carbon fibres and advanced cooling channels, resulting in vastly improved braking performance. Ferrari offers two tyre choices developed in collaboration with Michelin: Pilot Sport Cup2 for road use and Pilot Sport Cup2R for ultimate track performance.

Exterior Design

The Ferrari F80’s exterior is nothing short of revolutionary. Developed by Ferrari’s Styling Centre under Flavio Manzoni, the F80’s design connects Ferrari’s racing heritage with its futuristic vision. The car’s dihedral cross-section gives it a muscular and aerodynamic profile, while the floating bubble cabin sits 50mm lower than the LaFerrari, enhancing the car’s aggressive stance.

Notable design elements include:

Butterfly doors that open vertically for easier entry and exit.
A short-tail rear with two configurations—stowed or deployed rear spoiler—that enhance aerodynamics depending on driving conditions.
The NACA ducts and rear slots, which not only improve cooling but also emphasize the car’s aerodynamic and high-performance design.

Interior

The Ferrari F80’s interior takes inspiration from Formula 1, with a cockpit that feels like a single-seater racer. The cabin’s compact proportions emphasize the driver’s central role, while the passenger seat is subtly integrated, nearly disappearing into the trim.

The asymmetrical seating layout allows the passenger seat to be set further back, creating a narrower yet ergonomically sound cabin that also helps reduce the car’s frontal cross-section. The new steering wheel is smaller and more ergonomic, with physical buttons for intuitive use.

Warranty

The Ferrari F80 comes with the brand’s standard 3-year warranty, with the option to extend coverage through Ferrari’s 7-year maintenance plan, ensuring owners enjoy peace of mind for both mechanical and electrical components, including the hybrid system.

Ferrari did say that all the 799 units of the new F80 have been sold out. Once launched, the F80 is expected to be priced at over AED 14 million. The new Ferrari F80 will primarily go up against the McLaren W1, Lamborghini Temarario, and the upcoming Porsche Mission X.
