The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 ultra-luxurious electric SUV has been revealed in its production guise at the Shanghai Auto Show. The EQS 680 is the first electric vehicle to bear the Maybach badge and, going by the luxurious interior and premium features on offer, it surely deserves the Maybach badge.
Maybach Heritage
In the world of automotive luxury, Maybach is a brand that can be considered the king of the hill. Founded in 1909, Maybach started off by producing petrol and diesel engines for different types of vehicles. In 1960, Daimler-Benz, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, bought the Maybach brand and then Maybach started producing luxurious versions of Mercedes-Benz cars.
Towards the end of the 20th Century, Maybach was known for its ultra-luxurious cars and Mercedes-Benz fully incorporated the brand with itself to form Mercedes-Maybach. The brand produces some of the most luxurious cars in the world and they are all based on Mercedes-Benz cars.
Now, Maybach has revealed its very first electric vehicle. Based on the architecture of the Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan, the Maybach EQS 680 electric SUV shares most of its powertrain components with the EQS 580 electric sedan. However, there is a clear differentiation between the six Mercedes EQ models and the very first Maybach EQ model.
Design & Styling
Maybach branding is found all across the new electric SUV. Up front, the Maybach branding is found above the waterfall grille, and multiple Maybach logos are found on the non-functional lower air intakes. The branding is also unsurprisingly found on the wheels, the headlamp, and the puddle lamp too. In total, over 30 Maybach logos can be found inside and outside the EQS 680.
The other Maybach tell-tale signs are also very much present. You can choose to have the car in a custom dual-tone paint job, with the top half in one colour and the bottom half in another. The hand-painted pin-stripe on the side is also present and you get to choose from two 21-inch options and one 22-inch option for the wheels.
Interior
Inside the Maybach EQS 680, there is no dearth of opulence. Despite it being a large SUV, there’s seating only for four. This only means it is spacious and there’s lots of room for massive reclining seats at the rear. With such an SUV, the rear is where one would want to be.
The two captain seats at the rear are furnished with the most lavish leather in a diamond-stitching pattern. The seats have endless adjustment options in addition to a massaging function and they can either be cooled or heated. Nappa leather is standard and with sustainability in mind, Mercedes-Maybach has opted for a more environment-friendly approach to tanning using recycled materials.
Other Niceties For Rear Passengers
- In-car refrigerator
- Silver-plated Champagne glasses
- Four USB-C Ports
- Two HDMI Ports
- In-Cabin & MBUX control tablet
- Two 11.6-inch Displays
- Burmester 4D Surround Sound system
Up front, the two seats are just as luxurious as the ones at the rear. It does feature three large screens that handle infotainment, vehicular controls, and instrumentation. The centre console flows from the front to the rear seamlessly. All put together, it sure is a tech fest in there.
Electric Motors & Battery Pack
As aforementioned, the Maybach EQS 680 is based on the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 sedan. As a result, it uses the same dual-motor drivetrain setup. However, the power output has increased significantly. The EQS 680 produces 649hp and 950Nm compared to the 536hp and 858Nm. This allows the electric SUV to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 4.4 seconds. The top speed, however, remains identical to the EQS 580 at 210km/h.
The two motors are powered by a 107kWh lithium-ion battery pack that gives the SUV a maximum range of 600 kilometres on a single charge. Since this is a vehicle in which owners would spend most of their time in the rear seat, Mercedes-Maybach has changed the air suspension a bit to allow for a more supple ride, especially for the rear passengers when driven in the ‘Maybach’ drive mode.
Pricing
Prices of the Maybach EQS 680 haven’t been revealed yet. However, we expect it to be priced at around AED 795,000 which is around AED 112,000 more than the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600. The SUV will go on sale later this year and exact prices will be revealed then.
Until then though, if you’re interested in buying a Maybach car, here are a few used Maybach cars for sale in the UAE.
