Sport cars, dreams for most, reality for few, with dozens of many gorgeous examples, Mercedes-Benz AMG GT’s really stick out. Short and sweet compared to the beautiful Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG which saw a long life span and included variations such as a powerful Black series and a track ready version. Now that its successor has been in the spotlight for a while it’s time for the German Manufacturer to give the AMG GT a race day special.
Dubbed the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT R (this is subject to change), it’s poised to munch up anything in its path including asphalt of legendary racetracks and the road home. It’s said to be packed with all the necessary bits and pieces for going fast and making tremendous amount of noise during the process.
The idea has made its way through the rumour mill ever since launch. One test mule took to the track in Germany and, of course pictures were captured on and off the course, drenched in heavy camouflage. From them, we see some noticeable changes. A new rear diffuser has been added, with what looks to be a centrally mounted exhaust pipe instead of two either side.
It’s all been kept a secret for the time being, however as it is a track ready vehicle there’s no doubt it will come shipped with a more powerful version of the 4.0 litre twin-turbocharged V8 that current models currently pump out 503 horsepower with, 540 hp plus seems like an attainable figure. With an expected increase, top speed and 0-100 km/h time should be revised.
As for other tweaks, weight reduction is expected with certain unnecessary interior options taken out, a new aero package including that higher spoiler, stiffened suspension, plus lots more. We’ll have to wait and see about full details.
Track ready street legal vehicles are gaining momentum with all major sports car manufacturers having at least one in their line-up. Just to name a few, there’s the Dodge Viper ACR, Aston Martin GT12, Bentley Continental GTR 3, Chevrolet Corvette Z06 C.7R Edition and Porsche has the Cayman GT4 and 911 GT3 RS. Some stiff competition for Mercedes to go up against

This is not to be branded as part of the iconic Black Series Mercedes-Benz are famous for. That version of the AMG GT is said to come at a later date. As for the term GT3, that won’t be added anywhere either one particular company owns that acronym when its comes to street cars. There is a GT3 version coming, however it’s strictly for racing purposes only.
