Online car renewal to start next week

Starting from next week, (22nd of July to be more specific) renewal of registration for all vehicles can only be done online, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced yesterday. The move to online comes as part of the RTA’s continuous efforts to move most of its services to the digital realms.

The move aims to cut down waiting times at Tasjeel, Al Shamil and other RTA affiliated registration and testing centres across the Emirate as most customers will move online.

Technical inspections will still have to be done at these centres and once completed; the RTA will send you the registration documents within 3-5 working days. During this period, you’ll be left without the required documents as the previous ones are invalid, but to ensure you can keep mobile, the RTA will supply you with a report that you must keep on you while driving to inform the authorities of the current situation.

As well as vehicle registration, seven other essential services will also not be available at RTA customer service centres and will only be accessible via the RTA’s website (RTA.ae), Dubai Drive app, smart kiosk and call centre (8009090).

Once the system is online next week (22nd of July), motorists who conduct their tests at the vehicle test centres for their annual vehicle inspection will only receive their test results and will have to continue the registration process online.

This is not to be confused with services that have been readily available online. Renewal of registration for commercial fleets and new private vehicles were introduced in 2015 and 2016.

Later on in the year, the RTA has plans to launch more licensing services online. This includes fine payment, changing number plates, renewal of vehicle ownership and changing of vehicle ownership with number plate.

Stay tuned as in a few weeks we’re going to put the new service to the test!
