Finally, the wait is over! The wraps have finally been lifted from the all-new BMW 8-series just days ago at the prestigious 2018 24 hours of Le Mans.
Featuring striking lines, bold characteristics and signature double kidney grille, BMW didn’t want the BMW 8-Series just to look good in the flesh but on paper too. Focusing heavily on the suspension, drivetrain and chassis the Bavarian manufacturer are offering “supreme agility, precision and poise expected of a top-class sports car.”
At launch, the all-new BMW 8-Series will be available with two engines; one petrol and one diesel. The M850i xDrive comes with a new twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine with 523 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque which allows the model to launch from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds.
The 840d xDrive boasts a 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo diesel six-cylinder motor rated at 315 hp and 680 Nm of torque.
Both are mated to an improved eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic gearbox. We won’t get into exact figures, but BMW has implemented new management software and optimised hydraulic control to deliver sportier gear changes and increased efficiency and smoothness.
BMW 8-Series features
Across the board, Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers is standard as is BMW’s Integral Active Steering. The M850i can be had with active roll stabilisation. A wide range of active safety features are also available including Active Cruise control with Stop & Go, Lane and Steering Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Parking Assist and more.
Inside, BMW latest offering comes with the latest “Operating System 7.0 and control concept” or for us normal folks, an enhanced version of their already impressive instrument cluster. Mounted centrally is the infotainment system which spans 10.25 inches in diameter and can be operated by either one’s finger, voice or iDrive controller. Drivers have an even more impressive piece of digital tech as the digital dashboard cluster measures in at 12.3 inches in diameter and offer dozens of settings and graphics to suit every driver’s mood. There’s also an optional gear selector made from glass.
Now we’re not making this up, but, BMW thinks there is a gap between the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe. The all-new BMW 8-Series as a whole claims to fill that void and offer the best of both worlds; a thrilling sports car driving experience complete with a luxurious cabin that will leave a distinct impression on all.
