BMW i8 Roadster heading to LA Motor Show

BMW is currently working on a mid-cycle refresh involving the i8. Along with the standard coupe model, an i8 Roadster is part of the plan. After months of speculation, we’ve learnt we’ll finally catch a glimpse of the Cabrio.

Many speculated the i8 Roadster to make its grand debut on home soil in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Instead, the long anticipated convertible will make its global debut two months later at the LA Motor Show in November.

BMW won’t be empty handed during the event as reports suggest their latest X7 SUV concept will be on show along with other select BMW models.

Sales of the BMW i8 Roadster are set to start early 2018 for an undisclosed price. We can guarantee it will cost slightly more than its closed top counterpart.

As it stands, the drop top version will continue to use a 1.5-litre three cylinder motor coupled to an electric motor. With slight tinkering on the horizon and a larger battery, expect a modest increase in horsepower and full-electric driving range.

BMW appears to have long term plans for their electric sports car as a full redesign is scheduled for 2022. Rumour has it; the model is expected to ditch the inline three in favour for a fully electric drivetrain.

Rumours have only started to gain momentum as the Bavarian manufacturer has confirmed their campaign to contest in Formula E alongside other notable German brands including Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
