After almost a year of concepts, teases and speculation, Mercedes have officially revealed their entry into the pickup segment. This is the Mercedes-Benz X-Class.
Many will instantly recognise hints of the concept that have made their way to the final product. With larger headlights with LED’s, iconic Mercedes front grille and muscular appearance, the X-Class is ready to do battle with the best of them.
Inside, fans of the concept look away as it’s not as luxurious as one expected. Base models boast black cloth seats while higher trims benefit from leather seats.
Circular air vents and a tri-spoke multifunction steering wheel is standard, and the cabin can be fitted with “floating” 8.4-inch multimedia interface, leather dashboard and woodgrain trim.
Remeber, this is marketed as a workhorse and not a luxury pickup truck. The X-Class has 202mm of ground clearance which can be increased by fitting an optional suspension package. It can tow 3.5 tonnes, and its payload can withstand 1.1 tonnes of equipment.
As standard, the X-Class’s bed features cargo lighting unit and 12-volt power socket to plug in select electronics including a camping size cool box and air compressors.
Upon launch, Mercedes offers two flavours of the X-Class starting with the X 200 d equipped with a 2.3-litre turbodiesel rated at 161 horsepower and the X 250 d rated at 187 hp and is aided by a twin-turbo instead of a single unit.
Shortly after launch, Mercedes plan to add X 350 d to the list which will bear a V6 motor rated at 254 hp and 550 Nm of torque. There are plans to launch a petrol engine with the X 200 model with 163 hp on tap.
Rear wheel drive is standard mated to either a seven-speed automatic or a six-speed manual box with all-wheel drive an optional extra.
X-Class pickups will go on sale later this year in Europe with prices starting at 37,294 Euros or AED 157,731. While we are aware the truck will be made available in select European countries, Australia, South Africa, Brazil and Argentina, GCC countries, North America and Russia have been left out which surprises us as all three territories can’t get enough of the German brand.
Mercedes will offer customers three trim levels to choose from; Pure, Progressive and Power. All of which cater to select customer bases.
There’s plenty of time between now and November for Mercedes to announce more countries to receive X-Class models. In case they don’t, importing one shouldn’t be an issue.
Dubicars.com has new Mercedes-Benz and used Mercedes-Benz for sale in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Ajman.
