For the past two weeks, several leaks of what the upcoming 2017 BMW 5-Series is to look like has surfaced with most pointing to a rather similar design to the 2017 BMW 7-Series. BMW have officially unveiled what the vehicle is to look like, and those leaks were bang on.
With a fresh, sleek look, the all-new 2017 BMW 5-Series sports new curves on either side, redesigned headlights and an enhanced interior adding in a range of new features. Just to name a few, autonomous driving at low speeds, natural speech recognition, gesture controls and ParkNow.
A variety of four turbocharged engines are available. Two petrol units, a four cylinder 2-litre rated at 248 horsepower and a 3-litre straight six with 335 hp for the 530i and 540i respectively. The other two are diesel versions. Shortly after launch, we expect a plug-in hybrid of the 2-litre model to join the fray along with a 4.4-litre V8 motor.
The V8 powerplant will find it’s home in the M550i XDrive sedan and is capable of hitting 100 km/h in around 4 seconds making it quicker than the current M5. Of course, that won’t be for long as a successor for the M is in the pipeline. M kits are to be available at launch to add extra flare to the vehicles interior and exterior.
Rear-wheel drive is standard with top end models receiving all-wheel drive for that extra grip. An 8-speed automatic is standard to control the selection of engines at least in the GCC. Overseas, a five-speed manual is standard.
Sales are expected to start in February with an unannounced price.
