The legendary high-performance sedan, the BMW M5, has received a significant overhaul for the 2025 model year. The 7th-gen M5 boasts a revolutionary plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, marking a significant departure from its purely petrol-powered predecessors.
Exterior Design
Prominently flared wheel arches and side skirts create a muscular stance, setting the M5 apart from the standard 5 Series. The redesigned, high-gloss black M kidney grille features a single M double-bar and houses driver assistance system sensors.
Below the grille, a central air intake with a black frame (illuminated as standard) ensures optimal cooling. Triangular side air intakes painted in body colour further accentuate the car’s width.
Other exterior features include:
- M rear spoiler and diffuser element for optimized airflow
- Black chrome M twin exhaust tailpipes integrated into the rear apron
- Vertical divider in the diffuser referencing the front splitter design
- Body-coloured side skirts for a muscular feel
- 20-inch (front) and 21-inch (rear) alloy wheels
Interior & Technology
The interior of the 2025 BMW M5 is designed for both performance and luxury. The driver gets a new M leather steering wheel with customisable buttons and a sporty flat-bottomed rim.
Standard seats are comfortable and supportive, and a unique new Full Merino Metallic leather option with special stitching adds a touch of exclusivity. M colours are incorporated into the welcome animation and customisable interior lighting.
Other features include:
- 12.3-inch Curved Infotainment
- 14.9-inch Curved Display
- Android Auto & Apple CarPlay
- Panoramic Sunroof
- 18-speaker Harman Kardon Audio
- Head-Up Display
- Level 2 ADAS
Engine & Transmission
- Engine: 4.4-litre V8 Twin-Turbo
- Gearbox: 8-speed M Steptronic
- Electric Motor: 194hp
- Battery: 14.8kWh
- Max Power: 717hp
- Peak Torque: 1,000Nm
- 0 to 100kmph: 3.5 seconds
- Top Speed: 250km/h (Restricted)
- Top Speed: 305km/h (Un-restricted)
- Pure-Electric Range: 40KM
Driveability Features
The M5 has a 14.8 kWh high-voltage battery that allows for an electric driving range of up to 69 km. The car also comes with a variety of features that improve handling and performance, such as M xDrive all-wheel drive, an Active M Differential, Adaptive M Suspension, and Integral Active Steering.
The M5 comes standard with M Compound brakes or optional M Carbon ceramic brakes. The M Compound brakes have six-piston fixed-calliper brakes at the front axle and single-piston floating-calliper brakes at the rear. The M Carbon ceramic brakes are lighter and offer stronger braking power and greater fade resistance.
Weight Dilemma
The M5 tips the scales at a hefty 2,445kg. This is a significant increase compared to the previous generation M5, which came in at around 1,892kg. The biggest contributor to the weight gain is the M5’s plug-in hybrid system. Interestingly, the all-electric i5 comes in lighter than the M5. The i5 M60 weighs in at around 2,305kg. This is despite the i5 packing a large battery for its electric range.
BMW M5 In The UAE
The new 2025 BMW M5 is expected to launch in the UAE in the coming months and could be priced at around AED 500,000. The M5 rivals the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, Audi RS5, Porsche Panamera Turbo, and Maserati Quattroporte; among others.
