Driving the 2020 GMC Sierra AT4
Under the hulking bonnet is a 5.3-litre V8 petrol engine providing 355 horsepower and 471 Nm of torque. All of that is sent to either the rear axle or all four of them via a smooth-shifting 10-speed auto that has been specifically designed for the truck.
As for selecting drive modes, on the left-hand side of the steering wheel is the 4WD selector. Here you can select 2WD drive and two 4WD drive modes. Two of the three con be activated while driving with 4L being the expectation.
You’d think the chunky tyres would create a noisy cabin, but you’d be wrong. The cabin is surprisingly quiet.
With the standard lift-kit, you do sit much higher up on the road, and the long bonnet doesn’t help when it comes to seeing things in front for you but then where would the V8 sit.
Heading off-road is what the AT4 Sierra does best. Switch it to 4WD, and it won’t even feel as if you’re on different terrain.
Outside the 2020 GMC Sierra AT4
Towering over everything else on the road, the Sierra AT4 rides on chunky off-road rubber and looks the part of any desert excursion. As standard, the AT4, which if you didn’t know is GMC’s off-road pack, comes with a standard lift kit which gives it the towering presence, a unique grille with a shiny finish, off-road side steps and a set of bright auxiliary light.
Curves are near non-existent, and that’s not an issue as the truck is meant to be practical. With curves, they’ll just get in the way.
The tailgate is a two-piece split with part of the top being able to open to load small items. As a whole, the tailgate can be remotely operated making loading and unloading easier plus it doubles up as a step.
Inside the 2020 GMC Sierra AT4
Being a single cab, there’s space for two inside divided by an enormous storage compartment big enough for a laptop. Both seats are covered in leather and have cooling options. They are comfortable and offering cooling for those hot summer days.
Entertainment comes from a touchscreen interface in the centre console and has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity and everyone’s personal favourite app; Navigation. The system itself is smooth to use and is lag-free, that is until you have to reconnect a device.
GMC missed an opportunity to put some off-road pages here, but instead shoehorned them into the small driver display but at least they are there.
Safety & tech
When it comes to safety, if you’re looking for state-of-the-art safety features, you do get a few of those with the AT4 Sierra. The reverse camera is clear and offers three viewing modes, including a wide-angle mode.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard, and you’ll need it with the sheer size of the truck. What else you’ll need is a few more cameras as parking or just seeing around the vehicle is a task once again due to the size. But unlike the two reverse cameras, side and from cameras are not standard, and there’s no off-road camera option either.
Remote start is a blessing on a hot day as it starts the engine without you being in the car to get the A/C blowing nice and cold.
Final verdict
Need an offroad truck to get you through the soft sands of the desert, then the 2020 GMC Sierra AT4 is the car for you. If you’re looking for a truck that you can use on the road, stick with the Denali or base model.
