Here we have a future classic, the VW Golf GTI club-sport edition! It has been just over 40 years since a group of German engineers, managers, and enthusiasts met in a room and created the Golf GTI – one of the hottest hatchbacks to ever grace the road. Since 2001, VW has launched an anniversary model of the Golf GTI every five years to commemorate this amazing hatchback!
The real asset of this special-edition model is what lurks under its hood. VW took the 2.0-liter four-banger and massaged it to deliver 261 BHP and 350Nm of torque. But there is also an over-boost function that up the horsepower to 286 BHP for up to 10 seconds under full throttle, plus on this model it also got a bespoke suspension system for better handling, upgraded brake calipers finished in bright red with GTI letting. All told, the Club-sport 40 can hit 100kms in 5.9 seconds with the DSG transmission and since it does not have the R’s Haldex all-wheel drive system weighing it down, it feels sprightlier and much more fun into corners.
VW gave the Club-sport a new fascia that is deeper than that of the standard GTI and has larger air intakes. Behind the air intakes you will find air channels that send plenty of air to the brakes for optimal cooling during extreme manoeuvres.
To the rear, there is an extended roof spoiler that will help create just a hint of extra downforce, and down below there is a new diffuser that serves the same purpose, along with having the club-sport bespoke interior, leather wrapped GTI steering wheel and a carbon trim specific to this special edition model.
