The standard G63 model is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, which generates an impressive 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.
Power is channeled through a nine-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel, directing it to the all-wheel-drive system known as 4Matic in Mercedes marketing terms.
The G63 comes with standard low-range gearing (with a 2.93:1 reduction) and three locking differentials, allowing it to effortlessly conquer steep dirt slopes.
During our testing at the track, the G63, despite its substantial weight of nearly 5800 pounds, accelerated from zero to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
In addition to its enhanced power, the G63 benefits from AMG-specific suspension tuning.
While the ride comfort has significantly improved compared to older G-wagen models, it’s important to note that due to the SUV’s tall stature and off-road-oriented design, it doesn’t excel in terms of handling agility.
Moreover, there remains some wind noise at highway speeds.
When properly equipped, the G63 is capable of towing up to 6500 pounds, adding to its versatility and practicality.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
While the cabin maintains its distinctive rectangular design, reminiscent of older G-class models, it has undergone a comprehensive modernization.
It now boasts a 12.0-inch digital instrument panel, premium materials, and practical features like cupholders and a surround-view camera system.
Both taller drivers and passengers will appreciate the ample headroom and legroom available in both the front and rear seats.

Folding them down (with a 60/40 split) expands the cargo capacity to nearly 69 cubic feet.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The 2022 G63 comes equipped with a standard 12.0-inch infotainment system featuring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration, as well as built-in navigation. For connectivity, there are two USB ports in the front and an SD card reader.
Additionally, it includes a three-year subscription to Mercedes-Benz’s connected car services, offering essential functionalities like remote engine starting and stolen vehicle tracking.
