The Land Rover Defender is a rugged SUV that fuses fantastic off-road ability with good on-road manners. If that's the blend of abilities you're after, it's effectively in a class of one. Reinventing an automotive icon like the Land Rover Defender isn’t an easy mission. It involves taking special care to pay respect to the original vehicle without upsetting existing fans by producing a parody of it.
It's something Land Rover thought long and hard about before reviving the Defender name tag. After all, how do you create a product that proudly (rather than cynically) follows up on a car beloved by everyone from mountain rescue teams to urban hipsters? Well, the British brand decided the right approach was to leave no room for criticism, so it made the latest Defender more practical, more refined, and more capable off road than its legendary predecessor. Coming with plentiful JLR off-road upgrades ready for the desert including JLR Roof Rack, Front bumper with a built-in winch, Folding Ladder, Side Luggage, built in compressor, All Terrain Tyres & a JLR snorkel all purchased from Land Rover.
The P400 is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol with 396bhp, and it is hot hatch-bating fast – put your foot down away from the lights and you’ll hit 0-100km in as little as 6.0sec. The longer Defender 110 has air suspension fitted as standard. With larger 20in alloy wheels and off-road tyres fitted, it does a great job of taking the sting out of bigger urban abrasions. In fact, it's more comfortable and shudders less than the Volvo XC90, but it's close to on the ultra-supple Audi Q7.
Land Rover has taken a back-to-basics approach with the Defender’s interior design – and it's worked. Certain structural elements are exposed, including the front crossbeam that functions as part of the dashboard and as a passenger grab handle. There are loads of exposed bolt heads dotted around the interior, emphasising the Defender's utilitarian nature, and most of the surfaces you touch are covered in a rugged rubberised material.
Crucially, everything seems solidly made and bolted together tightly, yet, while many of its more road-focused rivals have plusher interior finishes, the Defender still manages to feel reassuringly expensive.
