Outside of the car market, it is a little-known fact that the Volkswagen Touareg is the product of a joint venture with Audi and Porsche, so it has a more pedigree than just about anything else in this price range. In fact, it shares two of its three available powertrains with the highly regarded Porsche Cayenne. In a way, you could view this midsize Touareg as a real bargain.
Under the bonnet you get a 3.6-liter V6 Engine that generates 280 bhp and 265 pound-feet of torque. As part of the revamp, the Touareg’s gets an eight-speed automatic gearbox now comes with a coasting function. This, and the Touareg’s new stop-start and battery regeneration technology. Coming with the famous Haldex all-wheel-drive-system (branded as 4Montion by VW) and is great on all surfaces. It delivers 90% of the 265 Torque to the front wheels most of the time better for fuel economy.
Outside, the facelift brings a revised front end, with new, larger bi-xenon headlights as standard, a new grille and a redesigned lower bumper and spoiler. At the back, the bumper has also been tweaked, with integrated LED fog-lights. There are the telltale R-Line badges on the front wings, but by far the most revealing sign that this isn’t your cooking variety Touareg are the imposing 21-inch twin-spoke ‘Mallory’ alloy wheels and low-profile tyres.
